Your divorce decree ≠ IRS rules.Just because your court order says who can claim a child doesn’t mean the IRS automatically goes by it.

-- The IRS follows federal tax law — not family court agreements.If you want to claim a dependent, you need to meet the IRS criteria AND (in some cases) file Form 8332. If your ex claims the child against the terms of your decree, you can:

-- Take legal action in family court-- But the IRS won’t “enforce” the decree for you

-- Talk to a CPA before you file
